Tenacity is the Driving Force for Owning a Business: Q&A with N-Style ID Owner, Toni Bissell
This entry was posted on July 21, 2014.
Toni Bissell, superwoman, mother and founder of N-Style ID, is the driving force for this contemporary and stylish medical bracelet company.
When her then 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes their lives were forever changed. They worked diligently to establish new patterns of eating, learn how to administer insulin injections and how to check blood sugar many times a day. However, a difficult task was finding a medical ID bracelet for the fashion-forward and fun young woman.
Hence, N-Style ID was born. Toni's vision is to make the lives of all those dealing with conditions requiring medical ID's less stressful by providing fun and fashionable medical jewelry.
Toni recently sat down to answer our questions and to delve into topics that range from her business to her daughter’s diabetes.
Why do you think it's essential to wear a medical ID bracelet if you have an ailment or allergy?
The most important reason to wear medical jewelry is to alert medical personnel that there is a medical condition they need to be aware of. Medical conditions can be life threatening, but if medical personnel are not aware of your condition they could likely treat you in a way that could cause irreversible harm.
How do you come up with the idea for bracelet designs?
The ideas for our jewelry comes from watching fashion trends and listening to what our customers ask for. My daughters are a big help in this department!
When you found out that your daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, what was that like?
It was very scary when she was diagnosed. I had no idea how I was going to handle it. Even though I was educated in fitness and nutrition, this was a whole new ball game. We didn't have Lantus then, so timing was everything and more difficult to control sugars and meals and....adolescents :-/
Are your daughters an integral part of your business?
When I first started the business, they did not want anything to do with it. I have always encouraged them to follow their own dreams not mine. Camille started showing interest about 4 years ago and is now a very big part of the company. I couldn't wish for a better partner!
What are some healthy diabetes dishes do you like to whip up for your daughter?
Her favorite is butternut squash soup and portabella mushroom burgers.
What would you say is the recipe for success when launching your own business?
