Healthy Snacks for The Summer

Whether you’ve got hungry kids running around this summer or your wanting to feel healthy and fit for the beach yourself, there are plenty of healthy snacks you can choose this summer. When the weather is hot, we usually don’t want heavy foods that leave us feeling sleepy or weighed down. Instead stock up the kitchen or the beach cooler with these fun, low-calorie, healthy snacks to keep you and the family energized all summer long.
- Fresh Fruit – There’s nothing quite like chilled, fresh fruit on a hot summer day. Just think of those juicy watermelons, peaches, plums, grapes and more. By offering a balance of healthy fiber and nutrients along with the sweetness, fruit is a great snack to have on hand that kids love. Whether you slice it up in fun ways, in a fruit salad, or left whole, fruit travels well in the summer.
- Veggies and Hummus – A very healthy alternative to chips and dip, fresh veggies can be sliced up for a great beach snack or an after camp nibble. Dipping the vegetables in hummus adds lots of flavor and some filling protein to the mix as well.
- Healthy Trail Mix – A mix of unsalted nuts and dried fruits are great to have on hand for a quick, filling and tasty snack in the summer time. Avoid trail mixes that are loaded with salt and sugary ingredients like chocolates. If you can, put together your own mix using raw or lightly roasted nuts and dried fruits, that way you can keep it healthy and choose your favorite flavors.
- Yogurt and Granola – Satisfy those summer cravings with a healthful and satiating snack like yogurt and granola. Individual containers of yogurt are great for travelling on the go in the summertime. If possible, try to avoid yogurts that are high in sugar, included added fruit. As an alternative, you can add your own freshly sliced fruit, which can cut down on the sugar significantly.
